There’s an art form or practice in the east that’s rapidly opening its doors and making its way into the west. A lot of people are intrigued and happily want to participate in this art form that involves physical postures which aim to purify the body from toxins. The method also increases the individual’s strength and stamina through meditation.

As mystical as it sounds, Yoga is a practice that more and more westerners are appreciating. Slowly, people welcome the ancient practice of exercise and meditation by openly participating. As a beginner, one asks, “What is Yoga?”

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” that means yoke or bind. Yoga is also a merging or a union of a discipline. Yoga as a practice is very newbie-friendly, which means anyone can jump in and join. However, before jumping in, one must know the basics and etiquettes involved in the method. One of those basics is the proper clothing.

Knowing Your Classes

Before deciding on what to wear, it’s important that you know what type of yoga class you’re attending. Yoga has 14 styles. Right now, we’re going to focus on the basics and the methods for the beginners which are: Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Bikram, Hot Yoga, Kundalini, Yin Yoga, and Restorative.

Shirts are Good Unless…

Yoga is an art form that involves stretching. Yoga is also about being comfortable in what you do. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to pick out the best tops while practicing yoga. Avoid any loose shirts or tank tops.

A lot of people fall for nip-slips and accidental exposures because they think that clothing that feels “alright” for day to day functions is okay for yoga. However, due to the several poses that the practice brings, a loose shirt might leave you entirely oblivious to the fact that you’re already exposed while doing poses.

T-shirts are also suitable to wear during class, so long as they’re not tight, don’t have plunging necklines, and not too binding. Try wearing a leotard underneath a shirt so it can add another extra layer of protection when doing difficult poses. Sports bras are also good once they fit you and provide support.

The Right Length Means the Right Way

When it comes to pants, Yoga pants are the easiest to find. Yoga specialty stores carry these pants at an affordable price. Before buying one, try doing a range of motion exercises in the fitting room so you can decide on whether the pants are too tight or not. The length of the pants depends on what class you’re taking: for more active yoga classes, ¾ lengths are just right. Just be careful of loose pants as these may trip you up during yoga sessions.

Another thing to watch out for is that most pants that stretch tend to become see-through. To avoid any wardrobe malfunctions, try wearing skin tone underwear that matches your pants. Try avoiding old pants as well. Fabrics do tire out eventually, so don’t use them when in yoga sessions.

Don’t Underestimate a Towel

Bringing in accessories is never frowned upon when it comes to yoga. In Bikram or Hot Yoga classes where temperatures are raised to encourage sweating, it’s always a good idea to bring a towel. If you don’t want to wear gloves, you can use your towel for traction instead.

Yoga Socks also provide an individual with traction while doing poses. Bringing personal yoga mat is also allowed, provided the fact that you’re uncomfortable using another person’s mat. Also, provide a mat string so that you can quickly bring and tuck it away when not in use.

Takeaway

Yoga has been around for quite some time. A lot of people already know the benefits that the art form brings. Yoga provides an individual with mental and physical balance, strength, and stability. For beginners, going to yoga classes is a gratifying experience. Before pushing through such an exciting class, it’s always good to know about the basics.

One of these basics is the attire. Having a good knowledge of what to wear during classes is a plus because part of doing yoga is about feeling safe and comfortable in doing poses and stretches. Try wearing the best attire so that you won’t be with the constant thoughts of possible nip-slips and wardrobe malfunctions while doing yoga.
